How to Choose Meta
Data for Your Website
When
choosing meta tags for your website, create an overall set for your home page
and as a default for your entire website. Send that overall meta data to us,
and we will set it up as the default for all pages of your website
Next,
create a set for each page on your website, specifically targeting the content
on that page. Below are some guidelines/tips to help you research, consider and
select the meta tag information (title/description/keywords) for your website:
Title:
·
Title
should be 40-60 characters (including spaces)
·
Incorporate
as many of your keywords as possible in the Title. The title is the name of
your web page that appears in the top bar of your browser window.
Description:
·
Description
can be up to 250 characters
·
Incorporate
as many of your keywords as possible in the Description. A description should
be a summary paragraph of who you are, what geographic areas you serve, and
what your primary products and services are.
Keywords:
·
No
character limit. Just make sure they are relevant, specific, and accurately
describe the information offered on your site.
·
Keywords
and phrases are not case-sensitive. Separate keywords/phases by a comma when
creating your list.
Tips for Choosing Good Keywords:
·
Choose
keywords and/or phrases based on how your customer would think/search for your
products/services (don't use your marketing buzzwords or acronyms unless they
are well-known by your target audience). (ie: content management system or
editable website)
·
Examine
your competitor's keywords. (To do this, go to their website. Right click on
the page and choose View Source. Toward the top of the code, look for <meta
name="keywords" content="keywords will be listed here">
·
Include
obvious misspellings of common words (ie: website management and website
managment or graphic design or graphic dezign)
·
Think
of synonyms of your major keywords (ie: content management system, CMS, web
management system, editable websites, editable web pages, etc.)
·
Think
of split and merged words (ie: websites or web sites)
·
Think
of singular and plurals (ie: web developer and web developers)
·
Think
of hyphenated and non-hyphenated words (ie: eCommerce and e-Commerce or online
and on-line)
·
Think
of geo-specific words (ie: Bennington, Omaha, Nebraska, NE)
·
Various
forms of your company name (ie: Web Solutions Omaha, WebSolutions Omaha, Omaha
Web Solutions, MidCompWeb - remember to think like your target audience thinks)
Once you
have chosen your meta tags, learn how to optimize
pages on your website by uploading title, description and keywords to each
page on your website.
