Choosing Meta Tags and Keywords

When choosing meta tags for your website, create an overall set for your home page and as a default for your entire website. Then, create a set for each page on your website. Below are some guidelines/tips to help you research, consider and select the meta tag information (title/description/keywords) for your website:

Title:

·         Title should be 40-60 characters (including spaces)

·         Incorporate as many of your keywords* as possible in the Title

Description:

·         Description can be up to 250 characters

·         Incorporate as many of your keywords* as possible in the Description

Keywords*:

·         Google offers a free keyword tool to help you select keywords at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal?defaultView=2.

·         Keywords are the MOST IMPORTANT element of successful search engine ranking.

·         No character limit. Just make sure they are relevant, specific, and accurately describe the information offered on your site.

Tips For Choosing Good Keywords:

·         Choose keywords and/or phrases based on how your customer would think/search for your products/services (not your marketing buzzwords or acronyms). (ie: senior living communities omaha or retirement communities nebraska)

·         Examine your competitor's keywords. (To do this, go to their website. Right click on the page and choose View Source. Toward the top of the code, look for <meta name="keywords"  content="(keywords will be listed here">

·         Include obvious misspellings of common words (ie: alzheimer's and alzhiemer's or dementia and dimentia)

·         Think of synonyms of your major keywords (ie: memory care, alzheimer's care, dementia care, etc.)

·         Think of split and merged words (ie: townhome and town home)

·         Think of singular and plurals (ie: community and communities)

·         Think of hyphenated and non-hyphenated words (ie: maintenance-free and maintenance free)

·         Think of geo-specific words (ie: Bennington, Omaha, Nebraska, NE)

·         Your company name (Ridgewood, Ridgewood Community, Ridgewood Senior Living, Ridgewood Active Retirement Community - remember to think about how your customers might search for it, not how you promote it)

Once you have chosen your meta tags, learn how to optimize pages on your website by uploading title, description and keywords to each page on your website.
